6 effective, beginner friendly SEO tips for 2024

Welcome to my second post, wherein I will attempt to provide value, and to prove my SEO credentials. In the process, I aim to teach you a thing or two, if you stick around. If you haven’t read my earlier post – an introduction to my little operation, you may do so here.

SEO (search engine optimization) is absolutely vital for online writers of any description. In today’s online landscape it is important to employ the best strategy to increase traffic, and thus eyes on your work. Nobody likes to work for nothing – right?

So, how can you rank higher on Google? Or even… dare to dream of that coveted first-page spot? I can help: with six actionable SEO tips to increase your company’s visibility and ranking on Google.

1. Think about User Experience (UX):

Google wants to make users lives easy, so in 2021 when Google, so one of it's 2021 updates was all about user experience. It looks at 3 main things:

. the website’s loading speed;

. stability;

. how interactive and responsive a page is.

Why is Google doing this?

In an effort to help users, Google switched to 100 percent mobile-first indexing... because people use phones a lot.

2. Use internal linking:

Look, if you’re not linking to your own pages, how are you going to keep people reading. The longer they stay on your site, the more chance you have of providing value, and converting.

As the eagle eyed may have noticed, I even used one of these bad boys at the beginning of this article!

So why did I do that? Well, internal links help to connect (link) different pages within a site using relevant keywords. This can be an enormous opportunity for SEO because, traffic is not always evenly distributed across all pages, leaving many pages feeling a little lonely.

Put simply, after adding internal links to existing articles, over 70% of posts see improved in Google. Bloody great news!

Internal links help Google to understand context through anchor text – clickable text in a hyperlink.

3. Focus on entity-based SEO:

What is entity-based SEO? Well, it’s a word or term that can be used to describe your niche contextually. There’s that word again – ‘context.’

That’s no coincidence!

It focuses on large concepts that allow search engines to provide accurate results immediately.

Some words have more than one meaning, for example, ‘band,’ so if you search for the elastic band, focus based SEO can help you find the Welsh musical group, rather than millions of results pertaining to rubber bands. You want to get your content in front of the right users? You need to help Google understand who you are.

To aid Google in this pursuit, it also wouldn’t be a terrible idea to include a words relevant to your niche. Also, don’t forget to have it in the meta title for your page, either!

4. Recreate your bog posts as videos:

Yeah, video is popular. Youtube, Tiktok, Instagram reels, streaming. People dig video. With that in mind, converting your blog posts into easily digestible videos will naturally give you a chance to reach larger audiences.

Publishers using video content on their websites see 41% more traffic from searches than those utilizing blog posts alone. If I was 41% taller I’d be playing in the NBA, but I’m not… So I amn’t.

5. Update existing content:

Search engines prioritize the most recent and most relevant content for browsers. But do not think that you can get a little lazy here – you can’t just change the publishing date on the post, or even delete it and repost again. This. Is. All. About. Content.

So when revisiting old posts, try to obtain the most up-to-date data, and genuinely relevant information and keywords. Don’t forget: always add value where you can.

6. Long-Tail keywords drive traffic!

Long-Tail keywords are a fantastic way to improve traffic with highly competitive topics.

Long-Tail keywords are more specific terms, and they’re not as popular. Usually they contain three keywords or more, and are not searched for as often as your target keywords, making them easier to rank for.

It is the difference between searching ‘dog food’ versus ‘organic dog food.’

You can find long-tail keywords fairly easily by looking at Google’s autocomplete results!

And that’s about it for now. Of course there are many, many more ways you can increase organic traffic with SEO in 2024, but as a beginner, these are going to be a great place to begin.

Remember that SEO is a process, and the more you use these tips, the more effective they will become.
